Job search for sailors

This information is intended for beginners to go on contracts to sailors. Those who have worked or are working for a long time probably have their own opinions and their own solutions to emerging problems and problems, which I hope to share with my colleagues.

Internet: only those who are under 40 and have experience working on contracts have a real chance. Otherwise, it is a waste of time and money. If you have other data – please share. Many “adventurous”, be careful!

The calculation is simple – the willingness of sailors to go to any expenses, cling to any (even ghostly) opportunity to find work. First of all, visit the sites with free registration and place information about yourself on free bulletin boards. On many sites, crewing agency – you can fill out and submit an Application form for free, do not miss this opportunity.

In many cities there are agencies that are engaged in posting such information at once to dozens of addresses. The whole question is in price and expediency, (Age, length of service, etc.) is up to you to decide.

Crewing Companies

If you are over 40, you do not have work experience on contracts, then the most real possibility of getting a job is through all kinds of “Crewing, Employment, Crewing”. The main task is to leave for the first contract and, as you understand it, to establish yourself.

All Crewings can be divided into three groups:

1) “Solid” – work for large shipping companies, high salaries, mandatory testing for language skills, often an independent medical examination, a decent office, the need for seniority on contracts in the specialty. As a rule, no extra money will be charged for the contract!

2) “Ordinary” – their majority. From very small (one room, 2 employees), to quite respectable. It is through them that it is most possible to get your first contract! Often you can get a job in Russian-speaking crews and if you are not a navigator, then skips without English.
It happens that a fee is charged for “entering the data bank” for “postage”, but the amount usually does not exceed $ 30. Beginning crewing companies and especially small ones – apparently without this it’s difficult. The range of amounts required for the contract is very large, from “thank you” to the transfer of the monthly salary or monthly from 3 to 10%. It is charged in different ways – officially or in the form of a bribe.

3) Prokhendei – alas … there are also enough of them – I wrote without quotes. The main distinguishing feature is from $ 50 to $ 100 for the notorious “entering into the data bank”, for “postage”. The demand for a contract fee, even before it is signed and departure to the ship! The promise of a job, regardless of your age, work experience, knowledge of English, etc. as soon as possible. There are many specific examples, including last year, when 27 sailors from Klaipeda “flew away …” for a contract, each paying $ 500-700.
